Baby Ghost on a Swing

I have loved seeing pictures of these adorable little Baby Ghosts on a Swing all over Pinterest and the internet for Halloween. I wasn’t able to find a free pattern for the idea and so I decided to make my own to share with you. These will be the perfect addition to my haunted farmhouse scene on my sideboard this year or swinging from the mantle. The most fun part about this pattern is how quick they are to make and how fun it is to find quirky little places to hang them and let them swing. I know you’ll have a blast placing yours all over your home, or even in the car. You might even want to take turns with your kids moving them to haunted swinging spots all through October. I hope you’ll find some fun ways to use this easy and fun to make pattern.

Materials:

Size H8 (5.00 mm) crochet hook

Big Twist yarn in White

Red Heart Super Saver yarn in Black

Fiberfill

Amigurumi safety eyes

Pink yarn of your choice

Yarn needle

Instructions:

Ghost:

Rnd 1: 6SC in a magic loop. Pull the free end of the loop snuggly to close the loop. If you are new to magic loop or if you’d like a quick refresher, visit my helpful tutorials page here. (6)

Rnd 2: 2 SC in each ST around. (12)

Rnd 3: *SC in the next ST, 2 SC in the next ST.** Repeat from * to ** around. (18)

Rnd 4: *SC in the next 2 ST, 2 SC in the next ST.** Repeat from * to ** around. (24)

Rnd 5: SC in the next 6 ST. CH 4, SLST in the 4th CH from the hook. SC in the next 12 ST. CH 4, SLST in the 4th CH from the hook. SC in the next 6 ST. (24 SC, 2 CH4 loops.)

Rnd 6: SC in each SC around, Skipping the CH 3 loops.(The CH 3 loops will be where we will thread the ropes of the swing through so leave them sticking out.)

Rnd 7-9: SC in each ST around. (24)

Rnd 10: 3 SC in each ST around. (72) Fasten off, leaving a long tail for stitching.

Eye Placement: Using Amigurumi safety eyes, put the eyes in place. Eye placement adds a lot of personality to toys so try a few different options. I placed mine in Rnd 5, with 3 stitches between the eyes.

Bottom Piece

Rnd 1: 6 SC in a magic loop. Pull free end snuggly to close the loop. (6)

Rnd 2: 2 SC in each ST around. (12)

Rnd 3: *SC in next ST, 2 SC in next ST.** Repeat from * to ** around. (18)

Rnd 4: * SC in the next 2 ST, 2 SC in the next ST.** Repeat from * to ** around. (24) Fasten off and weave in the end.

Using the long tail for stitching, stitch the bottom piece to the inside of round 9. Pause in your stitching when you are about 3/4 of the way around to stuff the ghost firmly with fiberfill. Continue stitching around to close the opening. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Rosy Cheeks:

If you’d like, you can embroider rosy cheeks on your ghost with a yarn needle and pink yarn.

Swing:

Row 1: With black yarn, CH 13, turn. (13)

Row 2: SC in second chain from hook and in each remaining stitch across. CH 1, turn. (12)

Row 3-4: SC in each ST across. CH 1, turn. (12)

Now SLST to the end of row 2. CH 60. Fasten off, leaving a bit of a tail for stitching.

Using a yarn needle, thread the tail for stitching through the yarn needle. Now place the rectangle of the swing under the ghost and pull the chain through one of the chain 4 spaces in Round 5. Pull the chain next through the other CH 4 space and attach the end of the swing securely with a knot to the other side of the swing. Fasten off and weave in ends. Adjust the ghost so that it is positioned sitting on the swing.

You did it! I know this little ghost is going to love haunting your Halloween home! Leave me a comment if you have questions or if you’re enjoying the pattern. I would love to hear from you. Happy Halloween!
