The Count’s Crochet Candy Coffin

A chill has entered the air. The shadows have stretched longer in the evenings and the leaves are putting on their beautiful colors before they dry out and fall. At sunset, I bring a sweater along for my evening walk and enjoy the sparkle of golden hour and the quiet that overtakes the day. The moon plays tricks as the clouds dance in front of it’s silver light. A Fluttering of wings and a feeling of being watched. Was that a Witch that just flew by? Or was it something else?

Create this spooky coffin to add to your haunted house. Perfect for serving trick or treaters or as a container for picnic supplies for a fall picnic. This pattern is an advanced beginner level pattern where we will practice stitching pattern pieces together and Pellon interfacing is used as a stabilizer to give the coffin it’s shape. Once you have completed the bottom piece of the Coffin, Lay the piece on the Pellon rigid interfacing and trace around the edges of the coffin. Cut out the interfacing piece just inside the traced pattern edges so that the interfacing piece is just slightly smaller than the crocheted bottom piece.

Now, using the interfacing piece as a pattern, lay the interfacing piece on top of the dark grey felt and cut out a matching grey pattern piece.

Lay the felt pattern piece on a flat surface and place the interfacing piece on top, matching the cut edges.

Lay the crocheted bottom piece on top of the interfacing with edges matched. Using the long tail for stitching, stitch around all of the edges of the coffin, securing the 3 pieces together with the interfacing sandwiched between the felt and the crocheted coffin bottom piece.

Coffin Sides Piece:

Begin by using a tape measure to measure all around the sides of your coffin. Mine measures 50 inches. This will be the length for the piece we will make for the coffin sides.

Rnd 1: Ch 21, turn. (21)

Rnd 2: HHDC in the second chain from the hook and in each ST across. (20) CH 1, turn.

Rnd 3: HHDC in each ST across. (20) CH 1, turn.

Rnd 4: HHDC in the next 12 ST, 4 HDC Bobble in the next ST. HHDC in next 7 ST. (20) CH 1, turn.

Continue in a pattern repeating * Rnd 3 for 3 rounds and then 1 round of round 4** until you have reached the number of rounds needed for the piece to be the measured length of the edges of your coffin. Don’t fasten off yet in case you may need to add more or reduce the number of rows when adding the edging to the bottom piece.

Now fold your crocheted coffin side piece in half to make a long strip and measure the height of your folded in half piece. Mine is 2.75″ X 50″. (Yours may be a bit longer or shorter depending on your stitch length and yarn used.)

Now cut a piece of Pellon rigid interfacing to match the height X length of your coffin side piece. ( 2.75″ X50″ for mine.)

Lay the coffin side piece flat with the bobbles facing down and lay the interfacing along the bottom edge of the coffin piece. Fold the coffin piece in half to sandwich the interfacing along the length of the strip. Ensure the bobbles are visible on the outside and not sandwiched inside the fold with the interfacing.

Cut a long strand of yarn and using a whipstitch, begin stitching the bottom edges together. After you have completed this, begin stitching the coffin sides to the edges of the bottom piece ensuring that the bobbles are facing out. (The bobbles are meant to be decorative bolts on the outside of the coffin). After the sides have been stitched around the coffin edges, use the long tail left from the side piece to join the last round of the coffin sides piece to the first round where they meet. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Dividers: (Make 2 of Different lengths to divide the coffin in two places.)

Rnd 1: Measure across the center of the coffin where your dividers will be. This measurement will be the length needed for each divider.

Rnd 1: CH 21, turn.

Rnd 2: HHDC in second chain from hook and in each remaining CH across. CH 1, turn. (20)

Rnd 3: Repeat round 2 until the piece reaches the desired length for the divider.

After divider piece has reached the desired length to reach across the inside of the coffin, fasten off, leaving a long tail for stitching.

Fold the divider in half to make a long strip and measure the height of the strip. Cut a piece of pellon stabilizer matching the height x length of the piece. (mine is 2.75″X 11″ for the straight across divider and 2.75″X 12″ for the vertical divider.)

Fold the crocheted divider piece over the pellon piece so that it is sandwiched in the middle and stitch the bottom edges closed with the long tail.

Repeat rnds 1-3 for the length needed for the other divider.

After completing both dividers, stitch them in place to the inside of the coffin at the bottom and side edges.

Fasten off and weave in edges.

You did it! Now fill your spooky coffin with a variety of treats for your trick or treaters!
