Be mine Beret

When love is in the air, as well as a few crisp snowflakes and chilly gusts, one fashionable way to stay cozy and chic is to top your Valentines day look with the heart dotted Be Mine Beret. This pretty hat works up in just 27 rounds with practice in color work and carrying the opposite color so that you never have to fasten off until the end. It’s a great way to give a little gift to yourself and quick enough to make for your Galentine friends with easy ways to try different color combinations. Don’t be too surprised if wearing it leads to a Valentines kiss from your secret admirer.

Pattern Notes: This pattern features a round disc hat that starts in the top center of the hat and increases to 20 inches and, from there decreases to the opening for the head. It is crocheted in one piece using SC and the added in color work stitches to look like hearts. Because it is predominantly the basic single crochet stitch with applications to practice increasing and decreasing, this is a great pattern for beginner to intermediate crochet artists who are building skills with pattern reading and color work and who would like to end up with a functional and wearable item.

For this pattern, we’ll be doing some colorwork for the heart stitches. Instead of fastening off and refastening each time we need to do a color change, we will be carrying our white yarn, hidden inside the work until it’s time for the white heart stitches to shine. With a little bit of practice and a few tips, you’ll see it’s pretty easy. Let’s give it a try.
- Begin by laying the running length of the red yarn across the top ridge of the next stitch.

2. Next, insert the hook into the same next stitch, underneath the ridges where the running length of the red yarn is laying. I hold the running red yarn in place across the ridge by pinching it with my fingers.

3. Now pull the white loop through the work.

4. Yarn over with the Red yarn.

5. Pull through the two loops on the hook, one should be red and one should be white.

6. You did it! It looks like a little heart.

7. Now you’ll continue to hide the white yarn inside the work by laying the white yarn across the top ridge of the work and working your single crochets around the running white length of yarn until it’s time to make another heart stitch. It’s challenging at first to carry the yarn but I promise you’ll get the hang of it very quickly and you won’t have to fasten off until the end of the project.
