Pillowcase Dress for Hyacinth the cow.

When my kids were small, each of them picked a special, cherished toy that came along for walks, picnics, mornings at the library, a zippy ride down the slide at the playground, naps and bedtime. I loved the way my kids found comfort from their little toy in moments of uncertainty and when they were about to embark on a new adventure. In keeping with the way we took care of my kids special toys, I made a pillowcase dress for Hyacinth the Cow. As you’ll see, I know much less about sewing than crochet, so this pattern is very simple. The benefit of simplicity is that it will hopefully allow this pattern to be adaptable to fit many sizes to include the perfect fit for your Child’s special toy. Enjoy helping your little one get their favorite toy ready for bed with the help of this cute little pillow case dress.

Materials:

Cut fabric pieces:

2 pieces cut 12×12 inches (If you’ll be making this pattern for a different sized toy, measure across the widest part of the toy, in this case, Hyacinth is 6 inches across. Double the measurement of the widest point and make a square of the measurement. For example if the toy is widest at the waist and measures 8 inches across, cut your squares to 8″X8″. )

Length of ribbon 30 inches long

Instructions:

  1. For each square piece, fold over the side edges 1/4 inch and press, then again fold over once more 1/4 inches and press. Stitch around to finish the edges.

2. With right sides facing each other, lay one square on top of the other with edges aligned. Measure up from the bottom edge 4.5” and make a mark on both side seams. Stitch from the bottom edge up to the mark on both side seam edges. (If you’re making the dress for a different sized toy, lay the toy on the squares and make a mark at the armpit level of the toy on the side seam of the fabric and then stitch up from the bottom of the dress to the marking on both sides.)

3. Fold down the top edges 1.5”. Stitch along the seam to make a caseing on both the front and back panels.

4. Measure up from the bottom 3”. Make a button hole for Hyacinths tail in the center of the back panel.

Here, Hyacinth is waiting patiently for her Pillowcase dress to be finished. She might also be a bit distressed that her shape is so square. It happens to all of us Hyacinth.

5. Add the ribbon through the caseing.
