Little Minnows

These cute little minnows are fun to crochet and are great for little fingers to play with. This crochet pattern is also fun and challenging for beginners and you can change their look by using different colors of yarn. I hope you’ll crochet a school of them today!

Pattern Instructions:

Materials:

  • Bernat baby sport yarn in ecru, and other colors of your choice.
  • size 3.5mm hook
  • small safety eyes
  • yarn needle
  • Stitch Marker

Gauge:

stitches X 7 rows= 2″X2″ square

Pattern used for Gauge: Single Crochet

Sizes: completed fish measures 3.5″x 1.5″

Abbreviations:

CH – Chain

FSC – Foundation Single Crochet

HDC – Half-double Crochet

DC – Double Crochet

SC- Single Crochet

SLST – Slip Stitch

ST(S) – Stitch(es)

SK – Skip

Notes:

This little fish starts with a magic loop and works up from the tip of the nose to the back fin with side fins crocheted as we go. This is a fun pattern to practice increase stitches, color changes and decrease stitches. I hope you will enjoy making them.

Pattern Instructions:

Body:

Rnd 1: 6 SC in Magic Loop. Pull snugly to close. (6)

Rnd 2: Use a Stitch marker to place in first ST to signal the beginning of the round. *SC in next ST, 2 SC in next ST. ** Repeat from * to ** around. (9)

Rnd 3: Move Stitch marker to beginning stitch of this round and in each beginning stitch of the next rounds. SC in each ST around. (9)

Rnd 4:*SC in next ST, 2 SC in next ST.** Repeat from * to ** around. (15)

Rnd 5:SC in each ST around, color change to yellow at the last pull through of the last ST of the round. (15)

Rnd 6-7: SC in each ST around. Color change to blue at the last pull through of the last stitch of the round.(15)

Rnd 8: SC in each ST around. (15)

Rnd 9: In this round, we will create the side fins for the fish. See them in the picture above? SC in next 3 ST, CH 4, SC in second chain from hook and in the next 2 Chains. Fin made. Now SC in next 9 ST. CH 4, SC in second chain from hook and in next 2 Chains. Second fin made. SC in last 3 ST of round.

Rnd 10: SC in next 3 SC. Now, skip the fin by crocheting in the next ST of the round after the fin. Continue to SC around skipping the foundation stitch of the second fin also. Because we skipped two ST for this round we will have a ST count of 13 now. (13)

Rnd 11: SC in each ST around. Color change to Pink at the last pull through of the last ST of the round. (13)

Rnd 12: SC in each ST around. Color change to Ecru at the last pull through of the last ST of the round. (13) Place safety eyes between rows 4 and 5 aligned with fins on both sides.

Rnd 13: SC in next 2 ST, Decrease. SC in next 5 ST, Decrease, SC in next 2 ST. (11)

Rnd 14: SC in each ST around. (11)

Rnd 15: *SC in next 2 ST, decrease.** Repeat twice more. SC in last 2 ST of round. Stuff firmly with fiberfill.

Rnd 16: *SC in next ST, Decrease.** Repeat 2 more times. SC in last St. (7)

Rnd 17: 2 SC in each ST around. (14)

Rnd 18-20: SC in each ST around. (14) Fasten off, leaving a long tail for Stitching. Fold tail flat. Using a yarn needle, stitch tail closed.
